Traditional Dance

On another afternoon, you might stumble upon a group of traditional dancers who are practicing in Pendhapa Sasangka. They are practicing their movements and routines for a special performance that will take place in AJAVI. Feel free to join them and practice your dance moves--the dancers will be happy to show you how to dance the Javanese way.

Solah Gatra, traditional dancers

A group of youth who are eager to explore the creative ideas of dance performance, Solah Gatra, works on the story of Dewi (Goddess) Anjani from the Ramayana shadow puppet epic, who was transformed into an ape. This art creation is intended to capture Dewi Anjani's regret and turn it into a choreographic form of Javanese dance in the Surakarta style.

The art work that combines the traditions of 'wayang orang' and 'kethek ogleng' (dance with ape movements) is titled Degradasi and is performed for public on Saturday, 7 Dec 2019 at Pendhapa Sasangka after a series of routine rehearsals since May 2019.

Solah Gatra Dance Group was established in 2013 and has been involved in a number of dance performances in Solo, Ngawi, and Jakarta. The name 'Solah Gatra' is taken from the word 'solah' which means motion, and 'gatra' which means clear/clarity. This group believes that movements that are carried out in a positive way reflect human behavior to bring themselves towards a better path.
